Professor Daniel Ziblatt: "Tyranny of the Minority"
The Harvard Club of Munich, together with the Yale Club of Germany and Munich Dialogues on Democracy, is pleased to invite its members to another exciting event, this time an evening with Harvard Professor Daniel Ziblatt.
Prof. Ziblatt is the Director of the Center for European Studies & Eaton Professor of the Science of Government at Harvard University and since October 2020, the Director of the Department Transformations of Democracy at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (Berlin Social Science Center). He has been awarded the 2019 Berlin Prize by the American Academy in Berlin and is the author, along with Steven Levitsky, of Tyranny of the Minority and How Democracies Die (a New York Times and Spiegel best seller).
Prof. Ziblatt will be speaking about the fragile state of democracies around the world, and especially in the United States, with the upcoming election. America is undergoing a massive experiment: It is moving, in fits and starts, toward a multiracial democracy, something few societies have ever done. The prospect of change has sparked an authoritarian backlash that threatens the very foundations of our political system. Why is democracy under assault in the United States, and not in other wealthy, diversifying nations? And what can we do to save it? Ziblatt offers a coherent framework for understanding these volatile times.
His talk will be followed by a reception exclusively for Harvard and Yale club members, and Dialogues on Democracy.
