Medieval Worlds & Modern Academia: An Evening with Prof. Alexander Riehle (Harvard University)

The Harvard Club of Munich warmly invite you to an evening with Prof. Alexander Riehle, Professor of Classics at Harvard University, together with Dr. Tobias Daniels and Dr. Sven Kuttner from LMU Munich.

We will begin in the Middle Ages: Prof. Riehle and Dr. Daniels will show how people in medieval Europe organized their knowledge, memories, and everyday life in personal books and notes. Using a few striking examples from the collections of the LMU University Library, they will open a window into how medieval men and women thought about themselves and their world. We will get a special tour of the University Library's manuscript and rare book collection, including the original globe map by Martin Waldseemüller with the first cartographic depiction of America.

In the second part, we will turn to the present and ask what it means today to work in the humanities at Harvard compared to Germany. Our guests will talk about career paths, research conditions, and current challenges on both sides of the Atlantic – and then open the floor for questions and discussion.
