2024 Loeb Lecture and Private Reception

The Harvard Club of Munich is pleased to invite its members to the James Loeb Lecture 2024. The lecture will conclude with a private reception for Club members in the historic library of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte.

Established in 2016, the Loeb Lecture pays intellectual tribute to James Loeb (1867 New York-1933 Munich), who was a Harvard alumnus, patron of the arts, scion of a Jewish German-American family of bankers, and who spent the latter half of his life in Bavaria. He is the founder of the Loeb Classical Library, a revolutionary collection that translated ancient Greek and Latin literature into English, and was an avid art collector. The Loeb Lecture is an annual event featuring renowned speakers in the classics, and is sponsored by the Harvard Club of Munich, in cooperation with the James Loeb Club, Hochried, and the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Munich.

This year’s speaker is Prof. Dr. Ingo Herklotz. Dr. Herklotz will present "Ikonographische Probleme in der frühen Katakombenforschung". Please see the details on the event page for the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte. (https://www.zikg.eu/aktuelles/veranstaltungen/2024/james-loeb-lecture-2…)

The catacombs of Rome, which had been the focus of historiography and piety since the end of the 16th century, opened up a view of an unknown iconographic world that was surprisingly difficult to interpret. In addition to the historical endeavor, the different interpretative approaches testify to the attempt to appropriate the early Christian monuments in a counter-reformation sense.

Prof. Dr. Ingo Herklotz, is emer. Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Marburg, and has published numerous books and essays on Italian art of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Another focus of his research is the history of the science and reception of early Christian and medieval monuments, which he pursues from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, 13 November from 18:15 to 20:00. A private reception for Club members will be held following the presentation and wine from the Harvard Club of Germany will be served. This event will be held at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Lesesaal Bibliothek, 1. OG, Katharina-von-Bora-Straße 10, 80333 München and via Zoom, Meeting-ID: 856 5934 5839, Passwort: 148258 (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85659345839?pwd=UmFZYU0xN1NxMGJ1MjlQM054NXgvZ…).

Registration is preferred. Please indicate your interest in attending by registering on our event page at EventBrite. There is no charge for attendance or the private reception for club members following the event.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, 13 November.
